Games, Comics, and Criticism
Posted on February 25, 2008
Besides maybe sleeping, playing games and making comics are the two things that take up most of my time. This article (totally worth the read. don’t forget, it’s in two parts) takes a look at game criticism and how games might be viewed, by the public and critics alike, more along the lines of comics, rather than “literature.”
My plan was to write a big long deal reflecting on both view points shared in the article, but instead I’m going with a simple thought: Books, movies, comics, videogames… there will always be “popular fiction” and “blockbusters.” And then there are those wonderful few that effect in you such a way that change your life forever. When games or comics can do that, and I believe with all my heart that both can, that’s when they will become ART. And we’ll all be better for it!
-edit: I was very happy to just discover this video interview, where some leading game designers articulate my previous point.
